In August 2018, BusinessInsider.com (one of our favorite sources of distraction — ahem — information) published a list of 17 disturbing facts about work. Here are some of them:
A quarter of Americans say work is their No. 1 source of stress.
In the US, stress from work is estimated to be the fifth-biggest cause of death.
87% of Americans have no passion for their jobs and spend 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime.
80% of US workers are outright dissatisfied with their jobs.
Those married to workaholics said in a study that they feel more estranged from their partners, and that they feel less control of their relationship.
A third of managers say they're losing their sense of humor because of work.
Nearly 60% of workers say their jobs are making them insomniacs.

Depressed yet? We aren’t. If work can produce such negative outcomes in the lives of so many, we reason that it must also be able to produce equally positive, and even potentially more so, outcomes as well.
That is what we are dedicated to pursuing. We have a lot of questions that drive us, and chief among them is: How might work help people flourish in all aspects of their lives?
As we begin this journey, know that we don’t always find the answers to the questions we ask. Our goal is to learn and to share. In this space, you’ll hear stories and thoughts about the experience of work, restaurants, leadership, and culture from Thrive’s leaders, team members, and other thought-leaders of various disciplines. We’ll keep you up-to-date with what we’re doing and what changes we’re making as we pursue our invitation of making a difference as an organization.
